L/100km Explained

The fuel-per-distance measure used in Europe and why lower is better.

Fuel per Distance

Liters per 100 kilometers measures how much fuel a car uses to travel 100 km. Lower is better: 5 L/100km is efficient, 10 L/100km is thirsty. This is the inverse of MPG's logic, which trips people up.

Comparing Cars

Because L/100km measures fuel per distance, the differences are linear and intuitive: a car using 6 L/100km uses twice the fuel of one using 3 L/100km. With MPG, the same doubling is harder to see — see the inverse-conversion guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Europe use L/100km instead of MPG?

It uses metric units (liters, kilometers) and measures fuel per distance, which makes comparing fuel costs and savings more intuitive than MPG.
