Torque Units Explained

Newton-meters and pound-feet — how engine turning force is measured.

Force Times Distance

Torque is a turning force: how hard something twists. It's calculated as force multiplied by the distance from the pivot. The SI unit is the newton-meter (Nm); the imperial unit is the pound-foot (lb-ft). One lb-ft ≈ 1.356 Nm.

Torque vs Power

Engine specs quote both torque and horsepower, and they're related but different. Torque is the twisting force; power (horsepower) is how fast that force does work. High torque gives strong low-speed pulling; high horsepower gives high top speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is torque the same as horsepower?

No. Torque is the turning force; horsepower is the rate of doing work (torque × RPM ÷ 5252). A diesel has high torque; a sports car may have high horsepower from high RPM.
