Digital Data Converters
Convert between bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, bits, and Mbps.
Digital data is counted in bits and bytes. One byte equals 8 bits. Larger units scale by 1,000 in the decimal (SI) system — kilobyte (KB), megabyte (MB), gigabyte (GB), terabyte (TB) — but by 1,024 in the binary system used by operating systems, where the units are technically kibibytes (KiB), mebibytes (MiB), etc. This difference is why a 500 GB hard drive shows only about 465 GB in your operating system. Network speeds are usually quoted in bits per second (Mbps), while file sizes use bytes — so 1 MB/s equals 8 Mbps.
