One mile equals about 1.60934 kilometers; one kilometer equals about 0.621371 miles. The mile comes from the Roman 'mille passus' (1,000 paces); the kilometer is a thousand meters, defined through the speed of light.
A useful rule of thumb: 5 miles is about 8 km, and 100 km is about 62 miles. For rough conversions, multiply miles by 1.6 or take roughly 60% of kilometers to get miles.
