MPG Explained

What miles per gallon really tells you about fuel use.

Distance per Fuel

MPG (miles per gallon) measures how far a vehicle travels on one gallon of fuel. Higher is better: a 40 MPG car goes 40 miles on a gallon, a 20 MPG car only 20. Because it's distance per fuel, comparing vehicles by MPG can be misleading — see the inverse-conversion guide.

US vs Imperial

US gallons (3.785 L) are smaller than imperial gallons (4.546 L), so the same car shows a higher MPG number in the UK. A 40 US-MPG car is about 48 imperial MPG.
